Beacon vs Algolia
Algolia is excellent and fast to adopt. Its pricing is indexed to your traffic, which means the better your search works, the more it costs — and search-as-you-type fires a billable request per keystroke.
Algolia, as published
Usage-based: roughly $0.50–$1.75 per 1,000 search requests depending on tier and AI features, plus record storage. Overages above a commitment are commonly billed at 1.5–2× standard rates. Enterprise agreements start in the tens of thousands per year.

Beacon
Beacon is a sprint component, not a sold product — it ships inside a Build Sprint from $990/week. It has no separate licence fee.

Where Algolia is better
- Genuinely world-class relevance and latency out of the box
- You can be live in an afternoon; a self-hosted index is real engineering work
- Global edge infrastructure you would otherwise have to build and operate
- A free tier and generous startup credits to begin with
Where Beacon is better
- No per-request meter — search-as-you-type stops being a cost decision
- Your catalog and your visitors' queries stay in your own database
- Shares a retrieval core with the rest of your stack instead of being a separate vendor
So which one
Choose Algolia if…
Choose Algolia if speed to launch matters more than unit economics, if you don't want to operate a search index, or if you're below the volume where metering hurts. For a lot of companies that is genuinely the right answer.
Choose Beacon if…
Choose a Build Sprint with Beacon if your search bill has become a line item you think about, if query data is something you want to keep, or if you're being pushed toward an enterprise commitment you don't want.
